- The Earth system is an integrated, interdisciplinary system.
Earth System Science Education (ESSE) is especially challenging for institutions because the curriculum transcends multiple departments and integrates physical, biological, social and engineering components.
- Earth system science provides relevance and inspirational value.
It is important to develop a sustainable set of courses that are enduring due the importance of the subject to society. Thus, the development of a grand vision for the Earth system curriculum is required. Creation of a new course requires significant faculty and administration commitment. The quest to create new educational paradigms to better understand the Earth system is essential. We have reached beyond the limits of our ability to quell our resource exploitation and we drift ever closer to failing the future without an abrupt change in the way our educational institutions address the approach to the Earth as a system.
