This section identifies the challenges and successes of internal institutional change at four U.S. universities that developed courses and programs in Earth System Science Education (ESSE). Designing an excellent course alone is not sufficient.  Strong administrative support, partnerships and collaboration within the institution and across disciplines, and an appropriate academic reward system are essential elements for making courses successful.
