Developing external partnerships and building community frameworks around Earth system science is essential not only for education and research, but also for the future of human societies. Productive partnerships that extend the benefits of Earth system science beyond the classroom and laboratory into the local, regional, and global spheres require ESS educators to forge links, exchanges and mutual trust with those in government, business, and the not-for-profit sectors.
