Formative use of evaluation is useful for the instructor as the data helps adjust or correct the flow of the instruction regularly, more closely meeting the abilities and needs of the students.

In ESSE:   

Examples include the Earth System Science Course mid-term survey from University of New Hampshire and the mid-term survey from Intro to Remote Sensing at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks.
