Summative uses inform the instructor about what happened by the end of the course. Attitude uses help the instructor learn about the students’ belief systems and perceptions at the end of the course.

In ESSE: 

At the University of California, Santa Barbara, one faculty member uses an essay-based final exam to expose students’ thinking about Antarctic Marine Ecology and Policy.

At the University of Hawaii at Manoa an instructor for a course in Global Environmental Change gives her students a 12 question, short answer test with assigned points for each correct answer.

At Lehigh University an instructor uses a predominantly multiple-choice Carbon Cycle Content Assessment for his students in an Introduction to Planet Earth course. One question makes use of two aerial photographs as prompts.

The University of New Hampshire Earth System Science upper level course uses a Summative Attitude Survey
