Rubrics clearly describe the evaluation criteria or standards expected of students. Rubrics typically are graphically formatted as a matrix with point values (often a 1 to 4 or 1 to 5 scale) scoring independent dimensions. The matrix clearly outlines the criteria students need to meet to score a specific point value. Rubrics may be applied to any classroom activity (written work, field work, project, presentation, experiment, etc.) and provide an external standard against which student performance may be compared. They are very useful for the instructor to uniformly grade or assess student work as well as helpful for the student in making explicit what outcomes are required. A detailed description about rubrics may be found under Rubrics on the FLAG (Field-tested Learning Assessment Guide) website, at National Institute for Science Education at University of Wisconsin, Madison. In ESSE:
Rubrics: This is the Science Portfolio Rubric from the Austin College course The Day After Tomorrow. The University of Missouri Kansas City Earth System Science 110 course uses a Lab Rubric and students at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks use the Grading Rubric to understand course performance criteria.
