Student portfolios are a collection of evidence and documentation of student work that demonstrates mastery, comprehension, application, and synthesis of a given set of concepts. Portfolios often contain examples and artifacts of work produced at all points of the course (beginning, middle, and end). Although portfolios are evaluated by the faculty member, the real power lies in the students’ reflection upon their own work; the portfolio allows them to see comparative growth over time. Portfolios often are assessed against a common rubric (see below). Detailed description about portfolios can be found at:
Science Education Resource Center (SERC) at Carleton College, Teach the Earth Portal, Assessing Learning in Geoscience
Portfolio Assessment Questions, Instructor’s Portfolio Guide Sheet and Student Portfolio Materials: Student Portfolio Guide, Student Self-Assessment, Student Portfolio Survey. Austin College successfully uses portfolios as part of a non-major course on climate change "The Day After Tomorrow: Global Change and Extreme Weather". The portfolios are developed throughout the semester and students meet one-on-one with the instructor at the mid-term point and at the end of the semester to discuss the portfolio.
