The ESSE Evaluation Working Group (EWG) has three members who have developed the Evaluation Toolkit: Sabra Lee, Anupma Prakash, and David Reider.
The EWG was formed by ESSE 21 to assist ESSE 21 member institutions in their understanding and use of evaluation as a strategy for improving teaching and learning Earth System Science. It has also served as liaison to and provided support for the ESSE 21 Program Evaluator, David Reider. Early on, the EWG realized that ESSE PIs were developing and/or looking for assessments that they could use in their courses. It also believed that it was important to introduce ESSE 21 faculty to the variety of assessment tools that exist in addition to traditional end-of-course tests, and why it is important to use them. The EWG decided to develop the Evaluation Toolkit to assist ESSE 21 and other Earth System Science instructors, and to include examples of different types of assessments that ESSE PIs themselves had created or modified. The resulting Evaluation Toolkit is deliberately slim and easy to use, with actual examples and helpful links. It does not include every type of educational assessment, but, rather, only those used by ESSE 21 faculty.
