Tools Supporting Earth System Science Research and Teaching |

 Developments in software tools and environments have resulted in innovative means to integrate, synthesize, analyze and visualize data underlying Earth system science research and teaching
Tools, in the context of this section, refer to software tools and environments that support but are not limited to data export, import, format conversion, management, manipulation, analyses, and presentation.
Some tools are very specific and designed to carry out a defined operation, such as converting a bitmap format file to a tiff format file. In other cases standalone tools are grouped together and given a graphical user interface. Such collections of tools can also form a software environment that can support a large variety of user needs.
The remainder of this section provides links to some selected tools available for processing geospatial data, modeling and data visualization. As some tools are tailored to do all three functions, there is a certain overlap in the categories in which the tools have been presented.
